ASHEBORO--Lillian Lois McKnight Dwiggins, age 86, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2013.
Lil was born to Ruth Ann Fields McKnight and Wylie Audie McKnight on July 6, 1927 in Brown County, Texas. She graduated from Bangs High School and Northwest Texas State School of Nursing. She retired from Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, NC after 23 years working in the Intensive Care Unit.
Known as Nana or Granny to her grandchildren and a host of their friends, Lil delighted in her family here and those across the country. She was an excellent lifelong seamstress and cook, known especially for her Christmas baking. Lil was a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting and believed firmly in the Quaker ideal of equality. She lived her life by the "Golden Rule" and gave generously of her time and resources as long as she was able. Lil was a kind and gentle soul and will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her constant and faithful companion of the last 12 years, Benji. In addition to her parents, Lil was preceded in death by her siblings Audrie Lee McKnight Coffman, Wylie Audie McKnight, Jr., Jack Norman McKnight and Geneva Inez McKnight McCormick.
She is survived by her daughter Debbie Pike and her husband David of Asheboro; grandchildren Nathan Pike and Michele Butts of Asheboro, Emily Pike of Austin, Texas; sister Bernice McKnight Stapleton of Burleson, Texas and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro on Tuesday July 23 from 6-7pm . Graveside service and burial will be in the McKnight family plot at Bangs Cemetery in Bangs, Texas on Sunday July 28 at 3pm. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009, CUOC, P.O. Box 784, Asheboro, NC 27204 or a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank Drs. Greg Grisso, Robert Krasowski and Christine McCarty, as well as Joyce Patrum, NP and Kelli Mosher, PA for their kind and competent care over the years. A very special thank you to Kim Monninger, RN for her compassionate care of Lil in the last months of her life. Her kindness is greatly appreciated and will be long remembered.
