Gurnie Lewis Wright, age 90, of Asheboro died Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Randolph Hospice House.
Mr. Wright was born September 23, 1922 in Randolph County to Gurnie and Lydia Cagle Wright. He was owner of Elam and Wright Accountants and was a past president of the North Carolina Society of Public Accountants. Mr. Wright served on the Salvation Army Board and was a charter member of the Asheboro Lions Club. During his time with the Lions Club, he served as president, secretary and long-term treasurer as well as cabinet secretary/treasurer. Mr. Wright was awarded the Jack Stickley Fellow, Melvin Jones Fellow, Lion of the Year, and the International President's Certificate of Appreciation. He served as vice chairman of the ushers at Central united Methodist Church where he was a member. In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his wife Lucy Leigh Lowdermilk Wright and daughter Catherine Evans.
He is survived by his son, Jim Wright and his partner Larry Davis of Greensboro; grandson, Doug Evans of Cary; granddaughter, Allison Evans of Winston-Salem; son-in-law, Dick Evans and his wife Gloria of Asheboro; and niece, Eva Hardison and her husband David of Durham.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 24, 2013 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Central United Methodist Church, 300 South Main Street, Asheboro, NC. Funeral services will follow on Friday at 2:00 pm at Central United Methodist Church Asheboro with Dr. Terry L. Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
