Leonard Dempsey Parks, age 87, of Asheboro, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home. Mr. Parks was born in Randolph County on April 1, 1929 to Foy and Opal Loflin Parks. Leonard worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation for 47 years, beginning on his 18th birthday an retiring on his 65th birthday. Leonard held different positions during his last 20 years of service in Davidson County as Road Maintenance Engineer. He raised beef cattle for over 50 years. Leonard attended First Wesleyan Church in Asheboro for over 80 years. Leonard Parks was presented the governor's highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, on April 1, 1994 by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. This award is presented to persons who have made significant contributions to the state of North Carolina through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments. In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his brother Howard Parks. He is survived by his wife, Mary Edythe Maness Parks; daughter, Beckie Henry and husband Pat of Asheboro; grandson, David Parks Henry and wife Angelica of Greensboro; great grandchildren, Shai Tilman Henry, David Parks Henry II, and Jozelyn Arianna Henry. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 12:00-1:45 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark C. Beane and Rev. Wilson Harris officiating. Burial will be held in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1535 North Moore Road in Robbins.
