Leon Stanley “Stan” Haywood, Asheboro resident, Randolph County Commissioner, and former owner of Prevo Drug, Inc died Tuesday morning. He was 73.
Stan was born May 22, 1945 in Robbins, North Carolina to Leon Wilson and Jessie Garner Haywood who preceded him in death. The son of mill workers, Stan learned early the importance of faith, family, and community.
A lifetime Tar Heel, Stan graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He and his wife Hope moved to Asheboro in 1972. He opened Prevo Drug, Inc. with business partner Jim Prevo that same year.
Anchored by his Christian faith, Stan believed in the importance of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ through acts of service. He was a founder and charter member of Cross Road Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, served as a Deacon, and shared his faith with the community, serving at one time as president of the North Carolina Baptist Lay Witness Foundation. He was active in helping shape the lives of his community’s youth, serving as an assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 527 for more than 18 years. Stan believed his pharmacy was his mission field. He worked overtime to take care of his customers, whether it meant late night deliveries to local nursing homes, opening up the store off hours for emergencies, or being a friend over a cup of decaf coffee.
He also believed in the power of politics as an impetus for growth in the community. He served on the Board of Education for Asheboro City Schools, Randolph County Board of Health, Randolph County Board of Commissioners, and North Carolina Board of Pharmacy. He worked tirelessly to advance the goals of Randolph County as well as those of the pharmaceutical profession. For his commitment to the Old North State, Governor Beverly Perdue awarded him membership in the Order of the Longleaf Pine. In April, the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy established the $1.1 million L. Stanley Haywood Recovery Fund. The fund will provide assistance to pharmacy professionals battling substance abuse problems.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Hope; his sons, Drew Haywood and wife Laura of Chapel Hill, Dr. Jonathan Haywood of Lewisville, and Mark Haywood and fiancée Kelly Mooneyham of Chapel Hill; his brother Jerry Haywood and wife Anne of Robbins; his sister Mildred Tschopp of Pennsylvania.
The Haywood family would like to express their gratitude to Randolph Health’s Randolph Cancer Center and its outstanding staff led by Doctor DeQuincy Lewis. They would also like to thank the Randolph Hospice House for their compassionate care.
