Leoda Smith Atnip, age 83, of Siler City, NC died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Universal Health Care of Ramseur, NC.
A graveside service will be held on 1:00pm, Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Oaklawn Cemetery, 737 Albemarle Road, Asheboro with Dr. Richard Crider officiating.
Mrs. Atnip was born on July 31, 1927 in Moore County, NC to Odus F. and Mary Della Smith. Leoda married Thomas J. "Pete" Atnip on September 1, 1945 who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Campbellsville College and taught high school English in Owensboro, KY as well as in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools where she also served as the adviser to the high school newspaper and yearbook. Leoda enjoyed needlework, crocheting and knitting, and was an avid reader.
She is survived by her son, Don Atnip and his wife Sharon of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Jan Atnip Massey and her husband Richard of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Hillary King, Christina King, Doug Massey and his wife Tammy, and Brian Massey and his wife Allison; great grandchildren, Drew Massey, Reese Massey, Marcos Campos, and Alex Campos; sisters, Florence Tuttle and her husband Harold of Siler City, NC; and Rachel Brewer and her husband Earl of Greensboro, NC; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 1, 2010 from 6-8:00 pm at Oakhurst Baptist Church, 2225 S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC.

The family thanks the doctors and nurses of Chatham Memorial Hospital and UNC Hospital for giving them a few more precious years with her, and gives special thanks to the staff of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program in Siler City. Their work not only strengthened her heart but also her spirit. Giving to others always made her happy and she would be pleased to help others enjoy the benefits of this program.
