Leo Greenwood Layne, age 99, of Asheboro died Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Universal Healthcare Of Ramseur.
Mr. Layne was born February 28, 1919, the son of John Lee and Sallie Greenwood Layne.
Mr. Layne was a native of Surry County, and a graduate from Ramseur High School. He served in the Army Air Corp in the China-Burma-India Theater during WWII, where he was an airplane and engine mechanic. He was proud of his 30 years of employment with the city of Asheboro having served as the city's first Sanitation Superintendent. He was a longtime member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Layne is preceded in death by his daughter, Sallie Ellen Layne and his sister, Lorene Brooks.
He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 57 years, Jane Morgan Layne and two daughters, Marion Hughes (Eddie) of Asheboro, NC, and Janna DeLuca (Jim) of Kernersville, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren: Ashley, Leslie, Tiffany, Jamie, Cole, Summer, great-grandchildren: Kytlin, Kaleb, Haleigh, Cameron, and Sophia, sister, Virginia Anderson of Houston, TX and brother, Dennis Layne of Asheboro, NC.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 8, 2019, from 12:30-1:30pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randy Browder officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.
