Larry Darnell Reid born Thursday April 25th, 1961, in Concord, North Carolina, the son of The Rev. Maxine Reid Woody and The Rev. Charles H. Woody. He completed his early education in Cabarrus County School System. He attended and graduated from Western Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Radio/Television and Film with a Minor in Music. He worked for WKXR thirty plus years. He was the station manager and on-air Talent at WKXR and WZOO. Larry was literally, “The Voice of Randolph County”. He was a member of Sunset Avenue Church of God and was the percussionist in the music department.
Larry was everywhere, serving on the Habitat for Humanity Board, CUOC Board, Member of the Board of Trustees at Randolph Community College, and the United Way. His service had been valuable, and he had the very highest caliber of work ethic. He was involved in many different charities and had been recognized by Regional Consolidated Services, Woodmen of the World, the Rotary Club of Asheboro for Outstanding Commitment to the Community and was awarded Citizen of the Year by Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce. Larry has demonstrated in many practical ways his deep and genuine love for the city of Asheboro and the surrounding areas. On September 15th, 2023, Larry was named the Honorary Mayor of Asheboro for the day and passed from this life to his eternal home on September 16th, 2023.
Larry used his many talents and gifts to serve as emcee for several community civic organizations such as Rotary, Hospice, and Kiwanis. He lived his life hosting and caring for others. He never met a stranger and had numerous friends to count.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Jarrell Reid. His dad, The Rev. Charles H. Woody and Pamela Woody, of Ramseur, NC. His sister, Rachelle Tyson, of Asheboro, NC. His brothers, Elvet Reid of Kingsport, TN, Charles Woody Jr. (Jenn) of Bristol, CT, Alfred Woody (Colleen) of Branford, CT, and mother-in-law, Alice “Sue” Jarrell. Larry had many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews left to cherish his memory. Preceded in death, his mother, The Rev. Maxine Reid Woody, his sister, Janice M. Watkins and his brother, James L. Reid.
Larry will lie in repose on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm and Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, and from 4:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. at Sunset Avenue Church of God, 900 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Matt Higgs officiating. A private burial will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Larry D. Reid Minority Scholarship Fund at Randolph Community College, 629 Industrial Park Ave., Asheboro, NC 27205 att: RCC Foundation or to the United Way of Randolph County, PO Box 597 Asheboro, NC 27204.
