Larry J. Hancock, age 76, of Mt. Gilead died Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Hospice House of Cabarrus County, Kannapolis, NC.
Mr. Hancock was born May 1, 1941 in Montgomery County, the son of the late Joseph Paul Hancock and the late Ida Chriscoe. He married Joann Dennis on July 19, 1963.
Mr. Hancock worked for Montgomery Garbage Service for 27 years and later worked at Capel Incorporated where he retired in 2003. Larry coached the Babe Ruth Baseball, Dixie Youth baseball and girls softball teams in Troy for many years. He was an assistant coach for the Troy All-stars team that went on to win the NC State Championship and to play in the Dixie Youth World Series in Sulphur, Louisiana, in 1978.
Larry was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and sports. His favorite past time was making walking sticks.
He is survived by his wife Joann of 54 years; two sons: Jeff Hancock and wife Patricia of Mt. Gilead, NC and Rodney Hancock and wife Jodi of Holt, Michigan; grandchildren, Jeffery Hancock, Benjamin Hancock, and Cameron Hancock; and best friend for the past 13 years, his canine friend Doby.
Mr. Hancock was preceded in death by brother Bobby Harris and sisters Mary Frances Hancock and Clara Mae Reynolds.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, 569 Liberty Hill Church Rd., Mt. Gilead, NC. The funeral service will follow at 2:15 PM, with Rev. Dave Wensil and Rev. Aaron Brooks, officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Mt. Gilead.
