Lantford Emmitt "Lanny" Cox, Jr, age 62, of Asheboro died Friday, August 15, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House.
Mr. Cox was born March 24, 1952 in Randolph County to Lantford and Nella Fae Cox.
He was a graduate of Asheboro High School in 1970 and Western Carolina University in 1978, with a degree in music education. Lanny was a member of Bethel Friends Meeting, was an accomplished musician, and was currently the Minister of Music at Marlboro Friends Meeting. Throughout his career he had been a high school band director and had performed extensively throughout this country and abroad, having performed and ministered with the Christian band "TRUTH" for over two decades. Most recently he had been the co-director of the Randolph Jazz Band, and played with the Burt Massengale Band, Greensboro Big Band, Swing On, Bump City East, and Phatt City. He also played in recent years with the Temptations, Four Tops, Guy Lombardo Orchestra, and Percy Sledge, among others.
He is survived by his brothers, Richard L. Cox and wife Sarah of Asheboro, Leslie D. Cox and wife Robin of Asheboro; nephews, Richard L. Cox, Jr., Robert A. Cox, David W. Cox, David A. Cox, Michael S. Cox.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Marlboro Friends Meeting, 2668 Marlboro Church Rd., Sophia with Rev. Ricky Sessoms and Rev. Bob Medford officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Randolph for the care given to Lanny during his illness.
