Katie Mae Harris Oleen, age 95, of Cross Roads Retirement Assisted Living died September 13, 2010 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington, NC.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 2:30 PM at Randolph Memorial Park with Pastor Ralph Kraft officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro.
Mrs. Oleen was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the daughter of P.D. and Nora Harris. She graduated from the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Winston-Salem in 1937 and the Peabody School for Public Health in Tennessee. She married Dr. George Oleen and moved to Monroe, NC. Mrs. Oleen was active in her community and was a member of the Chautaugua Book Club, Union County Medical Auxiliary, St. Luke's Lutheran Church Women and Sewing Group and was an Adult Literacy Teacher with the Laubach Reading Program. Mrs. Oleen initiated the Religious Art Festival held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church and was awarded the Woman of the Year Award by the Monroe Business and Professional Women's Club.
Mrs. Oleen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Oleen, her son, Dwight E. Oleen, parents and 3 brothers and 1 sister.
She is survived by sons, George G. Oleen, Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Virginia; Dr. Edward L. Oleen of Georgia; David O. Oleen and his wife, Kay of South Carolina; Charles L. Oleen of Georgia; and daughters, Katie O. Norton and her husband, Norman of South Carolina; and Beverly O. Shiflet and her husband, Harrison of North Carolina. She has 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
