J.W. Isom

James William “J.W.” Isom, age 77 of Asheboro, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC.

J.W. was born on December 14, 1944 to Fred and Irma Harmon Isom. He was an auto mechanic and car enthusiast whose life work was repairing old cars and motors. He was formerly employed by Randolph Used Auto Parts and he worked on carburetors for Roush Racing from 1997 to 2008. He was known as the carburetor king, having the ability to disassemble one entirely, clean it and reassemble it flawlessly. Once he even built a lawnmower with a V8 engine. J.W. was a character known for making homemade convertibles by cutting the tops off of cars and removing the doors. Many folks also encountered him at successful turkey shoots that he operated on Caraway Mountain all throughout the 80’s. J.W. also enjoyed yard work and being outside, and absolutely loved being with his grandkids.

J.W. is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Pauline Moran Isom; sons, James (Tracey) Isom Jr., and Jeff (Summer) Isom both of Asheboro; granddaughter, Megan (Seth) Hammack, and their children, Tucker, Kayden, Emmitt and Gracie, of California, granddaughter Amber (Clay) Hutchins, and their children, Paisley, Presley and Levi, of Robbins, and grandchildren Jeffrey Isom Jr., Jordan Isom, Mackenzie Isom and Arrianna Key, all of Asheboro; an additional five great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

J.W. was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Junior Isom; and sisters, Marie Kidd, Lorraine Lamb, and Patricia Allen.

A public visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home in Randleman, 600 S. Main St., Randleman, NC 27317. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at 12:00 noon at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel in Randleman with Rev. Gerald Hussey and Pastor Josh Leroy officiating. J.W. will be entombed at the Chapel Mausoleum at Randolph Memorial Park following the funeral service, 4538 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203.
