Joseph "Joe" Ruffin McCollum, age 97, of Randleman died Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Mr. McCollum was born February 23, 1920 the son of Arthur and Ira McCollum.
Joe was a native of Randolph County and served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Randleman for 90 years, were he formerly served as a deacon. Joe retired from Lorillard in 1983. Joe was a volunteer with meals on wheels, he was an avid gardener with flowers and vegetables and enjoyed wood carving and craftsman of wood strips for weaving baskets. He also enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves play. In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his wife Mary Shaw McCollum, brother, Jack McCollum and sister Ruth McCollum Shaw.
He is survived by his children: Lee McCollum and wife Sylvia of Nashville, NC, Eliza Way and husband Nick of Graham, NC and Art McCollum and wife Lynn of Randleman, NC; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer McCollum Sizemore and husband Kyle of Climax, Arthur McCollum, and Jonathan Lee McCollum of Raleigh; 2 great grandchildren, Bladen and Chloe Sizemore.
The family will receive friends Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 1:00 - 1:45 pm at First Baptist Church, 100 North Main Street, Randleman, NC. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Chris Heppding and Rev. Kenneth Reaves officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro with the Randolph County Honor Guard providing military rites.
