John Garland Newby, age 94, of Sophia died Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Garland was a native of Randolph County. Dad was saved as a young man. He always loved telling people about Jesus. He sang in a quartet for years. He was a Sunday School Superintendent and choir director at Old Union Methodist Church. Garland retired from Myrtle Desk in High Point. He loved talking about his work. When Garland retired he raised tomatoes, pumpkins and salad greens that he sold to the public. People were always coming by his woodworking shop where he made swings, chairs, canes and etc. Garland was a current member of Sophia Baptist Church and sang in the choir for years. He loved to sing little choruses to you. Garland and Annie married in October 1941. They were together over 70 years before her death 3 years ago.
He is survived by his sons: Jerry Newby of Sophia and Paul "Sonny" Newby and his wife Ramona of Sophia; daughters: Louise Brim and her husband R.J of Sophia, Bonnie Laughlin of Asheboro and Peggy Hinshaw and her husband Gary of Randleman; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sisters: LaRue Tolbert of High Point and Pauline Bulla of Trinity.
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC and other times at the home of Louise Brim, 4412 Newb Hill Rd., Sophia. The funeral service will be held Friday, June 5, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Sophia Baptist Church, 4082 Millikan Rd., Sophia with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Old Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sophia.
