John was born and raised in Asheboro, NC, worked in management at UPS before retiring, and spent much of his life enjoying time with friends and family in Asheboro, Cary, Apex, Raleigh, and Holly Springs, NC. John was our dedicated and charming father, son, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was a family man to his core, a devoted Christian and a proud patriot. He loved to tell stories, had a great wit with a keen sense of humor, was never late, and always put the interests of others before himself. He was loving, caring, and always willing to lend a hand or offer advice. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, pickleball and other competitive activities at annual outings with friends and family in Belhaven and Myrtle Beach. He coached his sons' baseball and basketball teams, volunteered at local churches and hospitals, and was a respected member of the community. He will always be loved and remembered as the brightest and purest soul, and a family man with distinguished character.
John is survived by his former wife and mother of his children Cindy Cockman; son, Cameron Cockman and his wife, Candice Chambers; son, Clarke Cockman; sister, Debbie Moore and her husband Terry Moore; and niece, Tara Gerberich, her husband Andy Gerberich and their children, Lily Gerberich and Graham Gerberich.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Colon Johnson Cockman, Sr. and brother, Ronnie Walker.
The family will receive visitors and last respects at John’s memorial and life celebration on November 18th, 2023, 2-4PM at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W Williams St in Apex, NC.
