John R. Charles, Sr., age 85, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 31, 2015. He was born in Rochester, NH on March 12, 1930 to Russell and Florence Demers Charles. John was a graduate of the Baptist Bible Seminary and SUNY State University of Binghamton, NY. He retired from General Electric after 37 years where he was privileged to have worked on the Apollo Space program. The last 23 years he worked at the G.E. Nuclear Energy Plant in San Jose, CA. He was a member of the HillSong Baptist Church in Chapel Hill and most recently a member of the Cross Road Baptist Church in Asheboro. John loved his trips to Israel to study Ancient Greek, Hebrew and biblical archeology. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marion Richard Charles; their daughter, Cynthia Charles Ellis of Asheboro, their two sons, John R. Charles Jr. of Boston, MA and Roy S. Charles of Daytona Beach, FL; his sisters Mary Glidden of Rochester, NH, Constance Tietze of Gainesville, VA, Shirley Hunt of Lynn, MA; and brothers, Richard Charles of Santa Rosa, CA and Leroy Charles of Rochester, NH; 13 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at HillSong Baptist Church in Chapel Hill on Saturday, August 22nd at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to HillSong Baptist Church, 201 Culbreth Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the Charles family.
