Chaplain Colonel John Frank Cagle, 97, died Tuesday, November 9, 2011 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro, NC. Col. Cagle was born April 14, 1914. He was a graduate of Troy High School, High Point College, and Duke Divinity School. During his 20 year career as a military chaplain, he served in the 864th Airfield Battalion (World War II) and the 5th Artillery Group (Korean War), and was awarded the Legion of Merit. In addition, he served at posts in Georgia, Germany, Colorado, Alaska, and Virginia. He also served as a United Methodist pastor for 20 years in the Western North Carolina Conference in High Point and Davidson County. After he retired he was an active part of First United Methodist Church in Asheboro. Col. Cagle is preceded in death by his parents, William Reid and Betty Cranford Cagle; his wife, Victoria Hicks Cagle; his daughter Carolyn Cagle Stein; his sisters, Polly Cagle Boyles and Nora Cagle Smith. He is survived by his grandchildren John C. Stein and his wife Renay of Reidsville, Thomas C. Stein and his wife Karen of St. Charles, MO, and Catherine S. Schwartz and her husband David of Greenville; his brothers Dyle Cagle, Glen Cagle, and Paul Cagle, all of Denton; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 224 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203, or the Neil and Carolyn Stein Scholarship Fund at High Point University, 833 Montlieu Ave, High Point, NC 27262. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 4:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Holder officiating.
