Joe Shimer Mize, Jr., age 84, of Crossroad Retirement Center, Asheboro, formerly of Denton, died Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Mr. Mize was born February 12, 1927 the son of Joe S. and Betty Workman Mize.
Mr. Mize was a native of Lexington, NC and retired from the US Navy after 22 years of active service and 8 years in the Fleet Reserves. He served during WWII, the Korean Conflict and during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of Landmark Baptist Church, Asheboro and enjoyed growing and selling azaleas in the Level Cross area.
He is survived by his wife: Frances Hill Mize of Denton; son and his wife: Ronald (Ronnie) and Mavis Mize of Denton, NC; step daughter: Connie Sue Holtzman of Denton, NC; grandson and his wife: Ronald and Misty; granddaughters: Christina and Tammy; 3 step grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother and his wife, Malcolm and Jackie Mize of Asheboro, NC and one sister: Betty Jean Hoover of Winston-Salem, NC
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC and other times at the home of his brother 1019 Ingram Drive, Asheboro. The funeral will be Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Frank Barrett officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park, with Military Honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
