Joan Hahn Shackelford, age 86, of Asheboro died Saturday, February 21, 2015 at her home.
Mrs. Shackelford was born in Greensboro, NC and grew up in Richmond, VA. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at Longwood College in Farmville, VA, where she was a member of the Pi Kappa Sigma Sorority. Joan was employed as an elementary school teacher in Franklin, VA before getting married and raising her family. She worked as a Reference Librarian at the Randolph Public Library where she retired after many years. Joan was a former volunteer, serving Hospice of Randolph, the Adult Literacy Program, and also a tutor with the public school system. Joan loved the piano and reading books. She was instrumental in starting the library at First Baptist Church. Joan also enjoyed bowling, playing golf, and tennis with her friends.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ernest Dabney Shackelford, Jr.; daughters, Cindy Everhart and husband John of Asheboro, Pam Nance and husband Terry of Oak Ridge, Sue Padjen and husband Mike of Greensboro; sons, Dab Shackelford and wife Michele of Wilmington, David Shackelford and wife Joy of Franklin, TN; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild born on Valentine's Day, 2015; and sister, Marian Virginia "Mitty" Sledd of Richmond, VA.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 2:30 - 3:45 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. A memorial service will follow on Saturday at 4:00 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro with Rev. Rodney Otwell officiating.
