Joan Powers Dunn, age 84, of Asheboro died Monday, March 19, 2018 at Cross Road Retirement Community.
Mrs. Dunn was a native of Asheboro and was born August 23, 1933 to Charles and Frances Powers.
She was a 1950 graduate of Asheboro High School and was named the first Miss Randolph County in 1951. Mrs. Dunn was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery caring for babies and young children for 50 years. She was a lifelong homemaker for her four children, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Dunn loved life, loved to sing and dance and loved her UNC Tarheels in which she was affectionately called Carolina Girl.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Cleve Dunn III and wife Mary of Asheboro, grandchildren, Megan Dunn of Holly Springs, Mariann Dunn Bass and husband J. D. of Asheboro, great grandchild, James Cleveland Bass; daughter, Beth Dunn Rush and her late husband Scott of Asheboro, grandchild, Brandunn Rush and wife Karla of Asheboro, great grandchildren, Scottlyn, Kardunn and Scout, grandchild, Brocdunn Rush and wife Caroline of Asheboro, great grandchildren, Clara Grace and Lizzie, grandchild, Joaniebeth Beane and husband Zac; son, Chris Dunn and wife Teen of Asheboro, grandchild, Jon Dunn of Asheboro and grandchild, Kelsey Dunn; son, Derek Dunn and wife Ann of Asheboro, grandchild, Drake Dunn; former husband, A. C. Dunn, Jr. of Siler City; brother, Charles “Buddy” Powers and wife Iris of Asheboro; sisters, Carol Wilkes and husband Eddie of Graham, Teddy Johnson of Camdon, SC, Cindy Nicolaisen and husband Bruce of Apex.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 133 North Church Street, Asheboro with Dr. Scotty Carpenter, Rev. Mark Hall and Rev. Gary Mason officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Christian Life Center. A private burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery prior to the service.
