Jean Dewhirst Newton, age 86, of 450 Mountain Top Dr., Asheboro died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at her home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with The Rev. Barbara J. Cooke, Rector officiating. Mrs. Newton was born in Haverhill, MA and grew up in Dover, NH. She was a graduate of Colby Junior College and served as a WAVE in the US Navy during World War II. Mrs. Newton was an active member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for over 50 years where she served in many capacities including the Episcopal Church Women's Group and Altar Guild Chairman. She was a volunteer with the Girl Scouts and a Docent with the North Carolina Zoo. Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore H. and Helen Linnell Dewhirst and her brother William Dewhirst. Her greatest joys in life revolved around family; she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Feaster Herrick Newton; daughters, Jean Newton Smith of Concord, Jennifer Newton Yow and her husband Chris L. Yow of Asheboro, Deborah Newton Raker and her husband Grant Raker of Southport; grandchildren, Christopher Yow of Charlotte, Lauren Smith of Concord, Katie Smith Gaston and her husband Jason Gaston of Apex, Benjamin Newton Yow and his wife Alice Yow of Concord, Bill Raker of Southport, Rebecca Yow of Asheboro, Colby Raker of Southport; great grandchildren, Holt Gaston and Walker Newton Yow; sister-in-law, Edna Dewhirst of Dover, NH. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 23, 2009 following the memorial service at the church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Newton's caregivers, Tonya Lassiter and Wanda Stout, the parish nurse, Vivian Byrd and to Sharon, Phyllis and all her friends at the Mountaintop Apartments.
