ASHEBORO - In the late evening hours at his home on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 10:33 PM, Jason Jay Thornburg , at the age of 80 slipped peacefully away into the arms of Jesus. He was surrounded by the love of his family during this time.
Jason was born on November 4, 1933 in Randolph County, NC to Numa Rupert Thornburg and Fannie Viola Varner Thornburg who preceded him in death. The depression years of the 1930's and 40's forced the family to move to several states during the early youth of Jason; but, relocated back to Randolph County where he resided throughout the remainder of his life. Jason served in the US Army during peacetime after the Korean Conflict. A carpenter and brick mason by trade Jason helped the Rev. Henry Thompson and family establish and build Smyrna Grove Community Church in 1961, where he taught the boys Sunday school class for 13 years. For 20 plus years Jason supported his family through construction work with Red Delk Construction and Ralph Allred, Myrick Construction, Harold Hughes, John Nance to name a few before being hired by county manager Frank Boling in 1978 to work for Randolph County Government Maintenance department where he retired in June 1999. Currently an active duty volunteer fireman, Jason was proud of his almost 30 years service with Ulah Volunteer Fire Department. He regularly attended Hopewell Friends Meeting Church since 2007.In addition to his parents, Jason was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Cora and Albert Luther, brother-in-law, James Emmitt Luther and sisters-in-law, Robbie Thornburg and Joy Thornburg and Frankie Luther.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Janie Ruth Luther Thornburg of the home; daughter, Julia T. Hooker and husband Max Hooker of Level Cross, NC; sons, Daniel J. Thornburg of the home, Derrick Thornburg and wife Kathy Thornburg of Asheboro, NC and Abu Dhabi, UAE, Darren Thornburg and wife Shannon Thornburg of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren, Dakota Abernethy and his wife Korie Abermethy, Jason Thomas Abernethy all of Asheboro, NC and Samuel Hooker of Level Cross, NC; step grandchildren, Daniel Hooker and his wife Erica Hooker of Climax, NC, Michael Cox and his wife Tara Cox of Ramseur, NC, Natasha Cox of High Point, NC and Haley Byrd of Fayetteville, NC; great grandchild Jackson Abernethy of Asheboro, NC; and step great grandchild, Gunner Cox of Ramseur, NC; brothers, Reid Thornburg and his wife Meredith Thornburg, Roger Thornburg and his wife Chris Thornburg all of Asheboro, NC, Leon Thornburg of Jasper, TX; sister, Sandra T. Routh and her husband Randy Routh of Randleman, NC and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Hopewell Friends Meeting, 2224 Hopewell Friends Rd., Asheboro, NC with Rev. Daniel Thames officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military rites provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The Ulah Fire Department will provide the Firemen Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, NC and other times at his home at 2116 Danny Bell Rd., Asheboro, NC.
