Janie Carlene Canoy Sumner, age 75, of Asheboro went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Randolph Hospice House. Mrs. Sumner was born May 2, 1939 in Randolph County to Roby L. and Myrtle Greeson Canoy. She was a 1957 graduate of Asheboro High School and retired postal worker of 20+ years at Randleman Post Office. She was a member of Grays Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member and past president of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Sumner was a past member of the Red Hat Society, Eastern Star Balfour Lodge #188. She was a volunteer at Randolph Hospital since the forming of "The Gray Ladies", was the "coffee cart" lady every Friday and received the "Volunteer of the Year" from former governor Bev Perdue. Mrs. Sumner volunteered with Randolph County Schools and was involved with Girl Scout Troup #1704. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sumner was preceded in death by her first husband, Odell Millikan, second husband, Farrell B. Sumner, step-son, Clarence Cottrell and half-brother, Billy Canoy. She is survived by step-daughters, Charlotte Welborn of Franklinville, Shawn Vuncannon and husband Gregory of Asheboro, Linda Burns and husband Harvey of Bennett; step-son, Stanley E. Cottrell of Randleman; 10 step grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Brenda Buckles and husband Raymond Gump of Asheboro, Nancy Capps and husband Joseph of Franklinville; brothers, Robert Canoy and wife Dee of Kernersville, James Canoy and wife Nellie of Ramseur, Harold Canoy and wife Judy of Asheboro, Glenn Canoy and wife Sandra of Laurel Springs, Richard Canoy and wife Dot of Ramseur, Larry Canoy and wife Faye of Asheboro, Roger Canoy and wife Krista of Asheboro; brother-in-law, Kenneth Sumner of Asheboro; sister-in-law, Delinda Beane of Virginia Beach, VA, Johnna Huxtable and husband Tom of Virginia Beach, VA; life time friends, Betty Short of 50 + years and Bertha Teague (Janie's personal prayer warrior). The family will receive friends Friday, February 13, 2015 from 6 - 8 PM at Grays Chapel United Methodist Church, 5056 N.C. Hwy 22 North, Franklinville. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Grays Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Nathan Snider and Rev. Alanda Harris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grays Chapel United Methodist Church, 5056 N.C. Hwy 22 North, Franklinville, NC 27248.
