James Ray "JR" Smith

James (JR) Ray Smith, 92, of Sophia passed away at his home on Friday October 11, 2024. JR was born September 6, 1932 in Asheboro NC to the late Drew and Mariner Smith. He is one of 9 children, and was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters.

JR was a long time member of South Plainfield Friends Meeting. He was a hard worker, working on the family farm while young and later becoming a self taught plumber. JR’s other interest included having several chicken houses and cattle farming. He was always willing to help anyone, had a great easy-going personality and a charming smile that you won’t forget. He will be remembered fondly by his family and friends. 

JR loved going to his mountain cabin any chance he could and also enjoying playing Rook with friends and family. JR is preceded in death by his wife Ruth and daughter Tawana. JR leaves behind 2 grandchildren, one brother Cecil and sister Mae Hill. 

The family will receive friends on Wednesday October 16, 2024 from 1:00-1:45 pm at Pugh Funeral Home in Randleman. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm. in the Eddie Pugh Memorial Chapel. JR will be laid to rest at South Plainfield Friends Meeting with Pastor Hugh Spaulding officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the South Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, 4033 Plainfield Rd., Sophia, NC 27350.
