James David Hanner of Randleman died peacefully at his home on June 30, after 100 years of service to his God, family, and community.

James was born November 8, 1923 to John Edward Hanner and Martha Georgia Long at his Hanner Grandparents’ homeplace. As a young man he was active in his church, graduated from Randleman Public Schools, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps when he was 19. James was sent to Paris Island, SC for training and was assigned to aircraft ordnance in the Ninth Marine Aircraft Wing, serving in the Pacific Theatre throughout World War II. 

Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Hanner graduated from High Point College on the GI Bill, and became office manager and Accountant at Laughlin Hosiery Mills. In February,1950, James married Clara Brent Byrd.

He attended St. Paul Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church of Randleman for more than 90 years. He was a Trustee, Church Council Chair, Sunday School teacher, Youth Director, and Treasurer. 

James was a Rotarian, a Master Mason (32nd degree) of the Balfour Lodge No.188 and a Scottish Rite Shriner. 

In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his siblings, Rebecca H. Fentriss, Robert A. Hanner, C. Grady Hanner, and John E. Hanner, Jr.

 Left to celebrate his life are wife: Brent Byrd; daughters: Ellen Robbins (Steven) of Sophia, “Nan”cy Medlin (John) of Raleigh; Sister-in-law, Miriam B. Campbell of Asheboro; Grandchildren: Reverend Dr. Lucy Brent Robbins of Asheville; Benjamin Hanner Robbins, (Carrie) of High Point; Sara Medlin Wilson (Chad); Jennifer Paige Medlin (Dave Ehinger); Caroline Medlin Schmidt (Jeffrey), all of Raleigh; Great Grandchildren: Carter Reynolds, Morgan & Madeline Schmidt, and Julian & Elliott Robbins; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in honor of James to the First Methodist Church in Randleman, 301 S. Main St, Randleman, NC, 27317 or the Crippled Children's Foundation, 2019 4th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203.
