James Wesley Garmon, age 83, of Troy died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Duke Hospice & Home Care, Hillsborough.
Mr. Garmon was born May 10, 1929 in Mecklenburg County, NC, the son of Jason W. and Margie House Garmon. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Troy, a graduate of Catawba College and received a Masters of Education from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Coach Garmon, as he was affectionately known, was a former teacher for 11 years at Apex School. In 1968 he began his first season as coach of the West Montgomery High School Warriors football team. He coached the Warriors for 22 seasons and his football program was the best in the state in regards to winning during this period. In February, 2010, at the West Montgomery Football Awards banquet, Coach Garmon presented the first-ever James Garmon Most Valuable Player Award to senior running back/line backer Landon Jordan. He also taught history and drivers education. He will be remembered by his family, friends and former students as a man of integrity, humility and love. He was truly a positive role model to many high school students during his tenure at West Montgomery and Apex.
Coach Garmon's 22-year overall record at West Montgomery is 187-50-5 (.775 winning percentage), Conference record: 127-18-2 (.864 winning percentage), State finalist 1975, 12 Conference championships (1969; 73; 75; 76; 77; 78; 80; 81; 82; 83; 84; 88. 6 second place finishes; only one losing season 1989 5-6 (5-5 during regular season), 15 trips to the playoffs - (7-15 overall). Overall record is 209-99-6, Three undefeated seasons (1977; 83; 88.) Home overall record - 100-21-2, Home conference record - 69-6-1, Away overall recored - 80-26-3 and Away conference record - 58-12-1.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Betty Connell Garmon, granddaughter, Lucy Park and three sisters, Dorothy Blackwelder, Betty Jean Garmon and Jo Gail Garmon.
He is survived by three daughters: Kathy Garmon McRae and husband, Greg of Colorado Springs, CO, Karen Garmon Williams and husband, Doug of Asheboro and Kim Garmon and husband, Greg Park of Waynesville; one sister: Phyllis Herrin of Concord; grandchildren: Kelly Newcomb, Robin Ordes, Adam Cagle, Abby Cagle, James DeFriess, Sam Park; great-grandchildren: Kamryn Ordes, Katelyn Ordes, Kayla Ordes, Colby Newcomb, Riley Newcomb, Arianna Park and Sam Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday, January 13, 2013 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy, NC. A Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, January 14, 2013 at 6:00 pm at West Montgomery High School Auditorium, 147 Warrior Drive, Mt. Gilead with selected speakers and Dr. Phillips McRae officiating. A private memorial inurnment will be held.
