James Harold "Jim" Clodfelter, age 78, of High Point passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Hospice Home at High Point.
Jim grew up in Asheboro and graduated from Farmer High School in 1958. It is fitting that he passed away so close to Memorial Day because he dedicated almost his entire career to supporting our men and women in uniform. The first thirty years of his work was to help develop and field Night Vision Equipment while employed by the US Army's Night Vision Laboratory in Virginia. He retired from there and started two successful businesses, Landscaping and Auto Restoration. Eventually, he missed the passion of supporting troops and worked with his son for ten years at NIITEK where they developed and fielded large vehicle mounted mine and IED detection systems that are used worldwide. These were a "game-changer" for our conflict in Afghanistan. Many men and women in uniform returned home safely because of the military systems that Jim helped develop and field.
Jim had many hobbies to include woodworking, automobile restoration, volunteering at churches he attended through the years, or any new project that would let him buy a new tool. His favorite activities lately seem to be cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events and spending time with his wife Sue.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Richardson Clodfelter; son, Fred Clodfelter and wife Christine of High Point; daughter, Myra Clodfelter of Greensboro; grandchildren, Julian, Mariah, Halle, Caroline, Clark, and Helen; great granddaughter, Maliyah; nephew, David Shipton of Sophia; first wife and mother of his children, Emily Thornburg Cagle of Asheboro.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 1:00-2:30 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. The funeral service will follow on Sunday at 2:30 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Katherine Cornell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Fisher House Foundation, 12300 Twinbrook Parkway, Suite 410, Rockville, MD 20852, www.fisherhouse.org or Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, 9429 Archdale Road, Trinity, NC 27370.
