Hugh Tayloe Gouldman, Jr. Hugh Tayloe Gouldman, Jr., a longtime resident of Asheboro, died March 15th at Clapp's Nursing Home after a long decline in his health.
Mr. Gouldman, a retired bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation moved to Asheboro on his retirement in 1988.
Hugh Tayloe Gouldman, Jr. Was born July 26th, 1926 at Columbia Hospital for Women in the District of Columbia to Hugh Tayloe Gouldman, Sr. and Alma Maude Bennett Gouldman. Mr. Gouldman was very proud of his ancestry on his father's side in King George County Virginia and on his mother's side in St. Mary's County Maryland. He spent his early years in Washington until his entry into the navy in 1944. The central part of his life had always been the Episcopal Church. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen and the Incarnation in Washington. In later years he was a communicant of St. Paul's K Street.
In June 1944 Mr. Gouldman graduated from Central High School in Washington where he was selected as the "Outstanding Citizen Student” by the Civitan Club of Washington. Upon his graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and began his service in August 1944 at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. After boot camp he was assigned to the fleet post office in New York City where he served for the duration of the war.
Mr. Gouldman took advantage of the GI Bill and entered the University of Maryland in 1946. Upon his graduation from the university in 1950, he was recalled to active service in the navy and served two years. After his separation from the navy he began his long employment with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as a bank examiner and latter in his career as data processing specialist. He very much enjoyed his time traveling through Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina as part of his professional duties.
On his retirement from government service Mr. Gouldman moved to Asheboro and renewed a friendship with his old friend, Johnnie Wilson. He was a committed member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for many years and was very knowledgeable of the traditions and practices of his denomination. Prior to his retirement, he became a licensed amateur radio operator holding the highest license class issued by the Federal Communications Commission. He was an active member of the Randolph Radio Club. One of his lifelong interests was trains and railroads. He had a library of railroad material and spent a good deal of time "train watching”.
Ten years ago he moved to Penick Village retirement community in Southern Pines, where he resided for a number of years until he came to Clapp's in early 2023.
He is survived by his daughter, Glenda Virginia Gouldman of Alexandria, Virginia. A service will be held on Wednesday March 20th at three in the afternoon at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Asheboro.
