Hilda S. Yarborough, a resident of Carillon Assisted Living of Asheboro, died Saturday, September 19, 2009. She was born May 1, 1918 in Durham, NC to the late I. Phillip and Hattie T. Straughan. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Yarborough was predeceased by her husband, Edward Hinson Yarborough; sisters, Helen S. Thrift and Jean S. Ollenberger. She is survived by two daughters, Jane Y. Osborne and her husband, William H. Osborne of Salisbury and Linda Y. Smith and her husband, Archie L. Smith, Jr. of Asheboro; grandsons, Matthew Edward Osborne and wife, Mary, of Durham, Michael Blake Smith and wife, Jennifer and Scott Alexander Smith and wife, Megan both of Asheboro; six great grandchildren, Isabel and Eloise Osborne of Durham, Riley, Tyler, Calvin and Penelope Smith of Asheboro; and a brother, William Norris Straughan of Forest City.
After her husband's death in 1955, Mrs. Yarborough worked as an office assistant for Drs. E. D. Shackelford and Fred Graham in their general practice offices. She was an active member of First Baptist Church then Central United Methodist Church; a volunteer for Hospice of Randolph County, Christians United Outreach Center, Meals on Wheels and The Salt Box. She had resided at Carillon Assisted Living of Asheboro since October 2007 and enjoyed the loving care of all who work there and the community of friends who are residents.
A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will be held Monday, September 21 at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church. The family will greet visitors at the church immediately following the service. Mrs. Yarborough's request was that her ashes be scattered in the mountains of North Carolina, a place she held dear to her heart.
