Helen York Spencer, Asheboro died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.
Mrs. Spencer graduated from Asheboro High School in 1933 and attended Woman's College in Greensboro where she received a business degree.
Long active in church and civic affairs, Mrs. Spencer was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Asheboro, where she was a Sunday School teacher in the primary department for over thirty years and had served as president of the Wesleyan Service Guild in the church as well as District secretary to the High Point District Wesleyan Service Guild of the Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church. She had also been active in and served as president of the Asheboro Chapter of the Business & Professional Women's Club, receiving their Woman of the Year Award in 1973. The first president of the Randolph County Democratic women, Mrs. Spencer received the "Kate Hammer Award" for outstanding service to that organization in 1980.
Mrs. Spencer was an avid square dancer and a past president and secretary-treasurer of the Smiling Squares. She was also a member of the Randolph Squares.
She is survived by son and his wife, Joe and Amanda Spencer of Asheboro, NC; son and his wife, Jack and Jane Spencer of Burlington, NC; granddaughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Frank Hood of Burlington, NC; grandson and his wife, Jim and Caroline Spencer of Chapel Hill, NC; granddaughter and her husband, Helen and Rawley Fuller of Burlington, NC; granddaughter, Holli Spencer of Asheboro, NC; great grandsons, Jack Spencer, Pritchard Spencer; Spencer Hood and Trent Fuller; and great granddaughter, Isabelle Fuller.
The funeral will be Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Rev. Michael Holder and Rev. George Roberson officiating. The family will receive friends following service in the church parlor.
