Helen Phillips Nance Powell of Asheboro died December 22, 2016 after a long illness. She was 85 years old.
Helen was born March 10, 1931 and grew up in Ramseur. Before she retired, she was employed as an optometric assistant.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cladie Treece.
She is survived by Gilna Nance and David Allred of Waynesville, Steve and Melody Nance and Laura Nance of Kernersville, Terry and Pam Nance of Oak Ridge, Tyler Nance of Winston Salem and Jolie, Tyler and Nolan Atkins of Black Mountain. She is also survived by her husband, Hal Powell, of Asheboro.
In her younger years, Helen was very involved in her children's lives and the life of the community. She was a Girl Scout leader, active in garden club and community beautification efforts, and was instrumental in establishing Westwood Park. She often invited the neighborhood children into her kitchen to dance. She helped the kids organize talent shows, art show, and debates during the 1960 presidential campaign. She was also involved with the family of her first husband, Stanley Nance. Helen was full of life, imaginative and creative.
When she married Hal Powell in 2003, they enjoyed traveling and many fun times with friends. There was much love and laughter.
The family will receive friends December 26, 12:00 to 1:00 at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. Services will be held there at 1:00, with burial to follow at Randolph Memorial Park. Memorials: Alzheimer's Assoc. of Western Carolina, 4600 Park, Ste.250,Charlotte, N.C. 28209.
