Helen Brown Phillips of Asheboro passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family and by those who knew her. She had a consistently positive outlook and enthusiasm that she maintained throughout her life. Helen was the classic "southern lady" who enjoyed a good laugh and was always ready for a game of bridge.
Helen was the daughter of John and Elma Brown and a lifelong resident of Asheboro. She and her brother Howard were the first twins born in the Asheboro Memorial Hospital on May 15, 1920. It was the only hospital in operation in the city at that time and was located on Sunset Avenue.
Helen grew up in Asheboro, graduating from Asheboro High School and then attending Women's College (UNC-G) in Greensboro. After completing the secretarial curriculum at Women's College she worked as a secretary at Acme-McCrary Corporation in Asheboro and later, with her husband Carl in his accounting practice.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Christian Homemakers Sunday School class. She was also a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Phillips and brothers Clifton and Howard Brown.
Survivors include her sons Bob Phillips and wife Judy of Asheboro; John Phillips and wife Debbie of Cary, NC; granddaughter Erin Phillips Pretlor of Raleigh, NC and grandson Ben Phillips of Redondo Beach, California. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Terry Matthews officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
