Helen Brown Coble Hawthorne, age 89, of Hwy. 42, Asheboro died Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at her home. A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 3:00 pm at Oaklawn Cemetery with Rev. Michael Holder officiating. Helen was a native of Asheboro, and a graduate of Asheboro High School and High Point College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Asheboro since 1948 where she was a member of the Blanche McGlohon Sunday School Class. She enjoyed teaching elementary school in Albemarle, High Point and the Charles McCrary School in Asheboro. She retired from teaching after a 31 year career. Helen was a member of Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Thursday Study Club, and the Retired Teachers Society. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling in Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and North America. She enjoyed collecting antiques and playing the game of Bridge and volunteered as a North Carolina Zoo docent. Helen was preceded in death by her parents Zell and Elizabeth Brown, and brother Cecil Brown. She was the widow of Samuel Lewis Coble, Sr. and Francis James (Jeff) Hawthorne. She is survived by son, Samuel Lewis Coble, Jr. and his wife Sancia of Asheboro; daughters, Martha C. Nolan of San Francisco, CA, Rebecca C. Provancha and her husband Brian of Asheboro; sister, Emma Jean Jones of Asheboro; grandchildren, Matthew Mowery, Mary Beth Mowery, Leigh Sonkens, Melinda Morrow; great grandchild, Dawn Morrow, Bayleigh Sonkens, Cassidy Sonkens, Sydney Hall, Addyson Hall. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 29, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro, NC 27203 or Hospice Of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009 or charity of donor's choice.
