Hazel Angell "Granny" Wood, age 96, of 540 W. Academy Street, Randleman went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Mrs. Wood was born July 30, 1915 the daughter of Jesse James and Annie Belle Chandler Angell.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 2, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC and other times at her home. The funeral will be Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Sophia Baptist Church, 4082 Millikan Rd., Sophia, NC with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Entombment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.
Mrs. Wood was a native of Yadkin County and a homemaker. She spent much of her life in Florida where she and her husband bred and raised Greyhounds. She was a member of Sophia Baptist Church. Hazel, or "Granny" to most, was known for her sourdough bread, fried apples and fried chicken. She was also an accomplished seamstress. She is preceded in death by: her husband: O. S. Wood; siblings: Ressie Taylor, Bessie Thomas, Laura Patterson and Claude Angell; one great-great grandchild: Carter Harris and son-in-law Bobby Simpson.
She is survived by: son and his wife, Jerry D. and Lena Wood of Lee, FL; daughter and her husband, Maryann and Tom Popola of Fort Washington, MD; daughter: Linda Kay Simpson of Randleman, NC; son and his wife, Jimmie R. and Betty Wood of Lee, FL; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Ruth Kelly of Sanford, NC, Edrene Holcomb of Yadkinville, NC, and Wanda McDaniel of Siler City, NC
The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude to Hazel's many caregivers for their dedication and gentle care given to Granny and her family over the past few years. Your kindness has been a great blessing.
