Hazel Bryant Johnston, age 96, of Asheboro passed away early Sunday, December 24, 2017 at High Point Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Johnston was born in Rich Square, NC on May 30, 1921 to William Ellis and Sara Maude Bryant. Hazel graduated from Rich Square High School and went on to continue her education at Women's College now UNC-G. There Hazel was involved in the Judicial Board – The Legislation of Women’s College – the Sociology Club, Dance Club and The Daisy Chain. She graduated in 1943 with a degree in Sociology and was still an active Alumni until her death.
In June of 1943, Hazel married George B. Johnston who was in the Army Medical Corps and training at UNC-Chapel Hill. Hazel and George left North Carolina after his graduation to continue his medical training at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. Hazel joined the American Red Cross in Philadelphia and worked while George completed his medical training. They then moved to Augusta, GA where George continued working in the Army Medical Corp during WWII. Hazel had George B. Johnston, Jr. in 1947 in Augusta, GA. Hazel and George again moved to Durham, NC where George completed his surgical residence at Watts Hospital.
In 1950, they moved their new family to Asheboro, NC to start their new life where they remained until their death.
Hazel was involved in many community organizations which included the American Red Cross, the Asheboro Library and was very involved in First United Methodist Church Altar Guild. She and George were also part of the founding fathers of the NC Zoo.
Hazel actively enjoyed playing tennis, bridge and was an avid Carolina fan.
She is survived by her son, George Johnston, Jr. and Claire Stephens of Charlotte; daughters, Amanda “Amy” Johnston Ingram and husband Hal Ingram, Jr. of High Point and Sara Neal Johnston of Gainesville, FL; grandson, Hal Ingram III and fiancée Kelly Leazer of High Point.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 3:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Rev. Lynda Ferguson officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
