Harry William Whitaker, born December 29, 1933 went home to be with Jesus on August 19, 2014.
Harry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Key Whitaker; son, David Whitaker and his wife Vickie; daughter Deborah Whitaker; granddaughters, Sherry Bray, April Smith and her husband Philip, and Nicole Carone and her husband Jonathan; great grandchildren, Lauren and Aaron Smith; sisters, Ruby Kivett and her husband Bob, Ruth Smith, and Doris Craven and her husband Matt; brother, Vernon Whitaker and his wife Judy; many nieces and nephews.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents Sam and Helen Whitaker, brothers James, Gib, Bill and Paul.
Harry served 4 years in the United States Navy and was a dispatcher for the NC Highway Patrol in Greensboro for 17 years. He was a chicken farmer for 20 years and carried the Courier-Tribune for 8 years and enjoyed working at Alvin's Automotive for several years. Harry enjoyed going to the coast fishing with his friends and always had a big "fish tale" when he got home. He also enjoyed tinkering with old vehicles, riding motorcycles and telling jokes. Harry loved to laugh.
The family would like to express a special "Thanks" to the staff at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home in Asheboro. You helped make a difficult situation bearable and you will always be like family to us.
A celebration of life service will be held at New Salem United Methodist Church in Randleman, Sunday, August 24, 2014. Visitation will be in the sanctuary at 2:00 pm with the service beginning at 3:00 pm. The family will also receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
