Gregory James Corbett

Gregory James Corbett, 41, of Corbett Road, Troy peacefully left his earthly home and entered the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on August 23, 2014. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Corbett; grandfather Noah Morris; paternal grandparents Bernard and Pauline Corbett; and aunt and uncle Judy and Larry Smith. He is survived by devoted wife, Amanda Luther Corbett of the home; the loves of his life, daughter, Kensy, and son, Calvin, both of the home; loving mother, Phebe Corbett of Troy; maternal grandmother: Inez Morris of Troy; proud sister, Misty Corbett McFayden (Kenny) of Ellerbe; nephew, Noah McFayden of Ellerbe; father and mother-in-law, Dennis and Gail Luther of Troy; brother and sister in law, Daniel and Tina Luther of Biscoe; nieces, Sarah and Kate Luther of Biscoe; brother in law, Joseph Luther of Troy; special "sister", Sherri Smith Davis and husband, Ronnie Davis, "nephews" Chase and Colby Davis all of Louisa, Virginia. Also survived by other family members and friends too numerous to count. Greg became an agent with NC Farm Bureau in 1995 and rose to be an agency manager in 2000 in Montgomery County and transferred to Moore County as agency manager in 2006. He achieved multiple top awards as an agent and a manager with Southern Farm Bureau Life Company and NC Farm Bureau. As a youngster Greg became well known at area fiddlers conventions for his banjo picking. He began to play with the Montgomery County band, The Dark Mountain Band, which lead him to play at The World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. He then formed Greg Corbett and the Backwoods Bluegrass Band with his Daddy. He later went on to play with other bands such as Red, White and Bluegrass and New Vintage. He then began with bluegrass legend Charlie Waller in 1992 as one of his Country Gentlemen and continued to tour with him until 2004. While touring with The Gentlemen he was awarded by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America, Banjo Player of the Year for 1996. Greg then formed The Circuit Riders in 2005 with longtime friends and toured until he started his most important and proud role as the loving, supportive Daddy. He also played an important role in coaching Kensy (especially with those amazing Lady Rattlers); and Calvin with Dixie Youth Baseball. He was a member of Long Hill Baptist Church for 20 years. Greg was known for his dedication as a friend and devotion as a family member. He is now in Heaven reunited with the ones he missed so much and waiting on the ones he left behind. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Troy; other times at the home. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3:00 pm at Long Hill Baptist Church, 637 Capelsie Rd., Candor with Rev. Mark Forrest, Rev. Daniel Luther and Rev.Brad Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Ophir United Methodist Church Cemetery, Troy, NC.
