George Tilman "G.T." Haywood, Jr., age 86, of 317 Chip Rd., Mt. Gilead died Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at his home.
G.T. was born August 10, 1926 at Mt. Gilead, NC, the son of George T. and Patsy Mae Blake Haywood. He was a member of Troy Pentecostal Holiness Church. G.T. was formerly employed by Jordan Lumber Company for 19 years as a timber cruiser. He was also a retired sawmiller and farmer.
He was one of the founding members of the Pekin Volunteer Fire Department. In 2009 G.T. was Firemen of the Year for the department. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Clayton Haywood, Arlie Haywood, Eb Haywood, Nola Haywood, Reece Haywood, Julie Haywood and Brownie Deberry; also one grandson, Benjy Haywood.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years: Josephine Parsons Haywood of the home; one daughter: Frances H Freeman and husband, Mickey of Mt. Gilead; seven sons: Tilman Haywood, III and wife Celia, Steve Haywood, Bobby Haywood, Garry Haywood and wife Debbie, David Haywood and wife, Michelle, Chuck T. Haywood, Ronald Wayne Haywood and wife, Carol, all of Mt. Gilead; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy; other times at the home. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00 pm at Troy Pentecostal Holiness Church, Bilhen Street, Troy, with Rev. Ronald Smith and Rev. George Harper officiating. Burial will be in the G. T. Haywood Family Cemetery, Chip Rd., Mt. Gilead.
