Richard Frederick Paschal, Jr., age 95, of Asheboro died peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Mr. Paschal was born July 9, 1918, the oldest of four sons of R. F. Paschal, Sr. and Gertrude Loftis Paschal, in Siler City, NC. He was a 1939 graduate of Wake Forest College and continued to support the Deacons generously throughout his life, with a particular focus on providing scholarships for athletes attending Wake Forest.
In early 1942, Mr. Paschal was inducted into the Army, and by the end of that year had graduated from Officers Candidate School as a 2nd Lieutenant. He married Frances Brower, his wife of 70 years until her death last year, on December 12, 1942. He was an Ordinance officer in the 5th Air Force, US Army Air Forces in the Pacific during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. He was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, the Phillipines, Okinawa, and at the war's end, in Japan.
Upon returning home from the war, he went to work for Burlington Mills, holding positions in various locations within that company for the next few years, going to work at Klopman Mills in Asheboro in 1950, where aside from briefly being recalled to the Army during the Korean War, he stayed until he went into business with his brother Forrest in early 1953. The work in their partnership is what eventually led to the establishment in 1954 of Paschal Associate Sales, a highly successful and well-respected firm dealing with sales and service of aggregage mining and metal finishing equipment. He remained at the helm of his company until he was nearly 90 years of age, and was held in high esteem by everyone who worked with him.
Mr. Paschal was an avid golfer for many years, and was instrumental in the development of Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro. He and Mrs. Paschal particulary enjoyed dancing, taking lessons at the Gene Stroud Dance Studio in Greensboro for many years. The music they liked dancing to most of all was the jazz and popular music of the Swing Era. He had an excellent collection of music, which he never tired of listening to.
He is survived by his son, Richard and wife Helen, of Carrboro; his son David, of Asheboro; and his daughter Denise, of Chapel Hill. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Hospice of Randolph, P. O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009.
