Foy Avis Ingram age 112 died peacefully March 19, 2016, at her residence, the Pines in Davidson, NC. At her death she was believed to be the oldest person in North Carolina.
Born November 28, 1903, in Farmer, North Carolina, Foy was the daughter of John Thomas Ingram and Christianna Cranford Ingram. She was preceded in death by brothers Henry Louis Ingram, John Thomas Ingram, Jr. and Charles Leon Ingram and two sisters, Alberta Ingram Smith and Mabel Ingram Redding. She is survived by her sister Anna Ingram Land of The Pines.
Foy, a graduate of Asheboro High School and Woman's College Business School, moved from Asheboro to Raleigh in 1923 to accept employment with the Secretary of State's Motor Vehicles Licensing Section which later became the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. At the time of her retirement in 1970, she was the Director of the department's Registration Division, the division responsible for the licensing, titling and financial responsibility of motor vehicles, a position she had held since 1946. She was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the governor of North Carolina for her outstanding service to the state.
Foy moved to the Pines in Davidson in 1988. Many years ago she had become a Life Master in competitive bridge play. She founded the duplicate bridge club at the Pines, a club which is now named in her honor. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Asheboro.
Born just three weeks before the Wright Brothers made the first successful flight, Foy often marveled at the changes she had seen in her lifetime. Her positive attitude, her wonderful sense of humor, her successful career at a time when that was rare for a woman and her abiding interest in her family made her an inspiration and a role model to her nine nieces and nephews, twenty-one grand-nieces and nephews, twenty-seven great grand-nieces and nephews and one great, great grand-nephew.
There will be a graveside service at the Asheboro City Cemetery, 160 West Salisbury Street, Asheboro on Tuesday, March 22 at 2:00pm. Pugh Funeral Home of Asheboro is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
