Feaster Herrick Newton, age 90, of Asheboro died Monday, November 11, 2013 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.
Feaster was born July 27, 1923 in Dover, New Hampshire, the youngest of Henry Arthur Newton and Irene Brown Newton's three children. He graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts. He enrolled in Georgia Tech, and would later graduate there with an engineering degree. His studies were interrupted by his service in the US Navy during World War II. While in the Navy he served in the Pacific on the destroyer USS Helm. In 1985 he retired from Burlington Industries after a long career in textiles.
He was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for 55 years, serving wherever needed. After retirement he remained involved in his community serving on the Randolph Prison Chaplaincy Board, the Board of the Salvation Army, delivering Meals on Wheels, working with Dora Atlas in the Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and volunteering as a docent at the NC Zoo. In 2003 he was awarded the Governor's "North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service." As a skilled craftsman, he created many pieces of furniture for his family; all the while finding time to be an avid golfer and fisherman and most importantly spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jean Dewhirst Newton; his brother, Henry Arthur Newton, Jr.; and his sister Helen Newton Peterman.
His family wishes to express a very special thank you to his caregivers Wanda Stout and Tonya Lassiter for their years of extra special loving care, and to the staff at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home for all their assistance.
He is survived by three daughters: Jean Newton Smith of Concord, NC, Jennifer Newton Yow and her husband Chris of Asheboro, NC, Deborah Newton Raker and her husband Grant of Southport, NC: grandchildren, Christopher Lee Yow, Jr. and his wife Jolan of Blacksburg, VA; Lauren Smith Faust and her husband P. J. of Concord, NC; Katie Smith Gaston and her husband Jason of Apex, NC; Benjamin Newton Yow and his wife Alice of Concord, NC; William Grant Raker, IV of Charlotte, NC; Rebecca Elizabeth Yow of Winston- Salem, NC; Catherine Colby Raker of Wrightsville Beach, NC; great grandchildren, Holt Thomas Gaston, Annie Jean Gaston, Parks Alexander Gaston, Walker Newton Yow, and Margeaux Mae Yow.
The memorial service will be Saturday, November 16th at 2:00PM at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro with The Rev. Barbara J. Cooke, Rector officiating. Military honors will follow at the church's columbarium. The family will receive friends after the service in the Parish Hall of the church.
