Evelyn Dorton Casper, wife of Charlie Barnes Casper, died May 10, 2013. She was a resident of Mountain Top Drive, Asheboro, NC.
Mrs. Casper was born in Ansonville, NC, June 17, 1925, the daughter of Martin L. Dorton and Lena White Dorton, and she resided during her life in Marion, Landis, Albemarle, and Asheboro, NC. Mrs. Casper attended Wake Forest College, graduated from Pfeiffer College, and received a Masters degree in Education and Guidance Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
On August 22, 1953, she married Mr. Casper at the First Baptist Church of Kannapolis. The couple lived in Albemarle from 1955-1960, and then moved to Asheboro, where Mrs. Casper was a teacher and a guidance counselor in the Asheboro City Schools. A long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Casper served there as President of the Women of the Church and was active in the Westminster Sunday School Class. Mrs. Casper was a member of the Reviewers' Book Club; she served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Asheboro during its early years; and she was a member and past Regent of the Colonel Andrew Balfour Chapter of the North Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Casper was happiest when she was entertaining friends and family, especially when entertaining her grandchildren at Cherry Grove Beach, SC.
Mrs. Casper is survived by Mr. Casper; by her two daughters, Dr. Carol Casper Figuers and husband Robert Bledsoe Figuers of Cary, and Dr. Susan Casper Shaffner and husband James de Schweinitz Shaffner of Charlotte; by her four grandchildren, Suzanne Elizabeth Figuers of Arlington, VA, Cameron Casper Figuers of Cary, and Caroline Ayars Shaffner and Charles Richard Shaffner of Charlotte; by her brother, Dr. M. Lamar Dorton and wife Bettie Sides Dorton of Statesville; and by her two nieces, Diana Dorton Schnebelt of Statesville, and Sarah Dorton Cozart of Raleigh; and by four grandnephews.
A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Tuesday, May 14 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 420 West Walker Avenue, Asheboro, NC 27203, with the family receiving friends in the fellowship hall immediately following. The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro, or to any charity.
