A native of Chatham County, Mr. Foust was born on Dec. 5th 1921 at Mt. Vernon Springs to the late Eugene Harris Sr. and Arabella Foust. He enjoyed telling people about the two springs; one whose waters aided health and the other beauty. He graduated from Bonlee High School in the Class of 1939 and served his country with the United States Army Air Corps in WWII. He married his wife, the late Mamie Lee Andrew in 1947 and they were married 49 years. He is survived by their daughter, Elizabeth F. Mason, her husband Rodney C. Mason of Asheboro and their two sons, Huntington Foust Mason, of Raleigh and Harris Carrington Mason of Asheboro. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews and by those of his wife, all of whom have been good to him.
Gene and Mamie Lee made their home in Siler City. He worked for years as the Parts and Service manager for Edwards Motor Company. Mamie Lee taught home economics at Jordan Matthews High School. They were charter members of Siler City Presbyterian Church and devoted most of their volunteer time to the congregation. Gene was a member of the volunteer fire department and he delighted in seeing his young grandsons riding on the Fire Department trucks during the Town's Fourth of July Parade. He also worked in his large backyard garden and enjoyed sharing its bounty. After retiring, he ran a small picture-framing business from his workshop. He remained up-to-date with the news of local and national events by visiting almost every day with his friends at Kenny's and at the Farmer's Alliance Store. He came to live near his daughter and her family in Asheboro in August of 2011, residing at the Mountain Top Apartments where he appreciated the kindness of his fellow residents and the staff.
Gene was preceded in death by his brothers, Ben Stroud Foust, Charles Ryan Foust, John Headen Foust and his only sister Sarah Elizabeth Foust Smith. Please make memorial contributions to the Siler City Presbyterian Church, 720 West 3rd Street in Siler City, North Carolina 27344.
