Ernest Morris Glover, age 89, of 156 E. Academy St., Asheboro died Sunday, February 19, 2012 at his home.
Mr. Glover was born July 30, 1922 in Walterboro, SC, the son of Ernest Hubster Glover and Fay Kathleen Morris Glover. The family moved to Charleston, SC in January 1932. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Navy as a signalman. He was a nearly 50 year employee of the News & Courier and Charleston Evening Post. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Charleston and a life member of P.N. Lynch Council 704 Knights of Columbus. Ernie was the Golden Gloves Champion, in his weight class, of North and South Carolina and his last fight was refereed by the Cinderella Man, James Braddock. Mr. Glover and his wife, Penny, moved to Asheboro in 1988 to be closer to his wife's family. Ernie is preceded in death by his wife, Penny Nichols Glover and his son Jeremiah J. Glover.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Glover Black of Charleston, SC and a son John S. Glover of Charleston, SC; grandsons, Judson Black, Frank W. Rash III and his wife Yonghee Rash and John Rutledge Rash all of Atlanta, GA; and a great granddaughter, Julia Elizabeth Rash of Atlanta, GA, and his step grandsons, Doug and Daniel Park.
He is also survived by his sweetheart and light of his life for the past four years, Ramona Shepard of Asheboro, and her wonderful extended family, sisters Lilian and Theresa and Ramona's daughter Cindy and her husband Mike Ingold.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, next to his wife of 57 years, Penny Nichols Glover and with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
A member of the greatest generation, not a finer man lived. In addition to being missed by his family and friends, he will be so missed by his best friend, Daniel C.J. Coleman who was a paratrooper in WWII and a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.
