Elmer Edwin "Sonny Boy" Harley, age 82, of Asheboro went home to be with his Lord Friday, February 8, 2013 at High Point Regional Hospital.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Faith Community Church, 4252 US Hwy 220 Business South, Asheboro. A celebration of his blessed journey will follow at 2:00 pm at Faith Community Church with Pastor Wayne Eller and Pastor James Coggins officiating. Elmer will be laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Seagrove with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
Mr. Harley was born in Stafford, VA on January 26, 1931 to the late Elmer Harley and Susan MacGregor Harley. He was a graduate of Stafford High School and Strayer University in Washington, DC. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Elmer formerly worked at the Pentagon and was retired from Strick Trailer Company. He set up many Mobil Oil service stations in Charlotte. Elmer was a member of Faith Community Church where he was on the Pastor's Counsel. He led the construction of Westside Christian Church in Jacksonville, FL where he was a Sunday school teacher and deacon. In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his son Jonathan Lee Harley, Sr. and sister Susan Davis. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Elmer was an avid gardener, fisherman, and follower of NASCAR. He loved sharing God's word with others and enjoyed listening to gospel music. Elmer will be remembered for his smile, laughter, and encouraging words to those he met.
He is survived by his wife, Nell Boling Harley; daughters, Deborah Garner and her husband Donald of Asheboro, Karen Russell of Asheboro and Deborah Jean Harley-Brown of Strasburg, VA; grandchildren, Ginger Jablonski and her husband Jeff of Emerald Isle, Jeremy Garner of Asheboro, Jason Garner and his wife Vicki of Asheboro, Jennifer Garner and her husband Matt of Asheboro, Amanda Graves of Asheboro, Jonathan Lee Harley, Jr. of Winchester, VA, Joshua Adam Harley and his wife Shelly of Strasburg, VA, Jason Allen Harley and his wife Katie of Strasburg, VA, Jeremy Iden Harley of Toms Brook, VA; 12 great grandchildren; nephew, Jay Davis; and nieces, Wilma Davis, Penny Davis, Brenda Lauria, and Charlotte Cummins.
