Dr. Mel Young

Dr. Clarence Melvin "Mel" Young, age 84, of 450 Mountain Top #213, Asheboro died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro. A native of Mebane, Dr. Young will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and papa. He attended Elon College, and graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. An optometrist he practiced in Asheboro from 1959 to 1987. He was an active member of the Asheboro Lions Club, member of the North Carolina Optometric Association, and member of the American Optometric Association. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he had served as a Youth Leader, Deacon, and Sunday School Teacher. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed playing golf. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.G. and Mary Ray Young, and two sisters Eula Burke and Billie Jean King. He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Nancy Young, one daughter and her husband: Susan & Bob Braxton of Asheboro, NC, one son: Kevin Young of Asheboro, NC, two grandchildren; Graham McCoy Braxton, and Claire Elizabeth Braxton, and one sister: Lib Nicholson of Mebane, NC The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The memorial service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at First Baptist Church, 133 North Church Street, Asheboro with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating.
