Dr. Kerry Harrison Bennet Ainsworth, age 80, of Asheboro died Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Randolph Hospice House.
Dr. Ainsworth was born April 30, 1935 in Vancouver, British Columbia to John Haworth Ainsworth and Tanis Ermine Bennet Ainsworth. He grew up in Ocean Falls, British Columbia, a small paper company town on the Northern British Columbia coast. In 1949 his parents immigrated to the United States. The Ainsworth family moved to Mobile, Alabama as non quota permanent residents with the paper industry. The paper industry took the family to Michigan where Kerry graduated from Muskegan High School earning the Regent Alumni Honor Award. He graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin with a BA and a concentration in Biology in 1958. While attending Lawrence, he became a nationally ranked tennis player. He then selected Northwestern University Medical School and received his MD in 1962. His internship was with Virginia Mason, a University of Washington program in Seattle, Washington.
Dr. Ainsworth served in the Navy and was stationed at Charleston Navy Base from 1964 - 1967 where he served as Lieutenant Commander. At Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, Kerry completed his OB/GYN residency as Chief Resident in 1969. He started private practice in Portland, Oregon, where he was on staff at Emanuel Hospital and Meridian Park Hospital. Dr. Ainsworth served the community of Asheboro in private practice for ten years and was a well-known and beloved OB/GYN. He later specialized in general practice and addictive medicine serving communities throughout the state of North Carolina.
Dr. Ainsworth was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He had a great love of education and learning, and was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia Cole Ainsworth; son, Scott Ainsworth and wife Rebecca of Asheboro; and one granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro with The Reverend Joe T. Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
