Dr. John Louis Davis, Asheboro Chiropractor, Of Crossroads Retirement Community, passed away April 26, 2013 in the company of his loving family at Hospice House.
Jack, as everyone knew him, was born to Helen and John Davis on Jan 12, 1924 in Ludlow KY, along the banks of the Ohio River. Jack's father, also a Chiropractor, passed away when Jack was only 5 years old. After his graduation from high school, he, his mother and sister Helen, moved to St Petersburg, FL where he was enrolled in college. It was in St Petersburg that Ruth Jockinsen caught his eye and the letter exchange that lasted through out WWII began. In the Army Air Corps, Jack flew 27 missions. After a harrowing mission over Germany, in which the end of a wing was shot off, his crew received air medals for successfully completing this mission and were promoted to lead crew for" showing leadership quality under pressure'.
After his return from WWII, Dr. Davis returned to college and married his Florida sweetheart, Ruth. In 1949, Dr Davis graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, IN and opened a practice in Asheboro, becoming its second chiropractor. He was devoted to his patients, and maintained his office until 2006.
As his family grew to four daughters, he was a leader of Pioneers for Boys, a leader in the church, a member of the Lion's Club, Kiwanis, Toastmasters and the Full Gospel Men's Fellowship.
He had a great appreciation for nature and love of animals. He and some friends formed a "Fishing Club " which included fishing trips and monthly dinners with their wives. He was an avid bridge player He loved gardening, trips to the beach and mountains with his family. He took great pride in his family and loved his pets. His last dog being his Chihuahua, Roscoe.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Westminster Sunday School Class and the 5 B's (Boomers). His wife, Ruth and sister Helen Davis preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughters, Carol Burrow and friend Jim Bingham, Pat Cooper and husband Richard, of Asheboro, Suzanne Karabin and husband Victor of Greensboro, and Kathy Bostrom and husband Lars of Raleigh. Grandchildren Jimmy Burrow of Winchester VA, Amy Reddick, Jennifer Turner, Wendy Tamplin, Eric Cooper, Allison Gallagher of Asheboro. Lee Trogdon of Chapel Hill, Barak Karabin of Greensboro, and Jennifer Karabin of Wilmington. Great grandchildren, Natalie Brooks, Autumn Brooks, Joseph Turner, Callie Shea Turner, Rich Gallagher, and Ayla Gallagher of Asheboro. John Burrow and Madisen Burrow of Winchester VA.
A memorial service for Dr. Davis will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Asheboro on Tuesday April 30, 2013 at 11:00. Rev Brian Gawf and Rev Connie Weaver will be conducting the service.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. A private inurnment at the church columbarium will be held at another time.
The family wishes to express their heart felt gratitude to the Staff at Crossroads, Hospice House and the Doctors and nurses of the PCU of Randolph Hospital for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to Hospice House, or the Courtyard Memorial Garden Fund at First Presbyterian Church.
