Dr. James "Jamie" Wilson Stitt, age 71, of Asheboro, died peacefully in his home from a short illness.
James W. Stitt was born in Fayetteville, NC to Reverend and Mrs. W.M. Stitt. He graduated from Louisburg College in 1965 and High Point College in 1967. He received his doctorate in British History from the University of South Carolina in 1976. Jamie joined the faculty of High Point College in 1969 and remained a cornerstone of the institution for the next 47 years. He served as Chair of the Department of History, Faculty Marshal and Chair of Faculty Council during his tenure. The university recognized his dedication to students with the Meridith Clarke Slane Award for Distinguished Teaching and Service. Jamie was also a scholar, publishing a book, Joint Industrial Councils in British History: Inception, Adoption, and Utilization, 1917-1939 (2006). He was active in the Canadian Studies Association, and the Economic and Business History Association. Jamie was a pillar of his community, serving as President of Asheboro Rotary, and as Senior Warden of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. He will be missed by family, friends, colleagues and students.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Dixon Stitt; step daughter, Megan Davis and husband David of Asheboro, NC; 3 grandchildren; and brother, Andrew Stitt and wife Patty of Badin Lake, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro with The Reverend Joe Mitchell officiating. A light reception will follow the service in the parish hall of the church.
