Dr. James Barnwell "Barney" Gibson passed away Saturday morning at Hospice House in Asheboro, NC.
He was a loved minister, husband, father and grandfather. Dr. Gibson was educated at Furman University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Drew University earning Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees from these institutions.
He was a native of Denmark, SC having been born there on February 6, 1928. Through high school, he worked on the family farm and worked at "Po Boys" store in Denmark. At an early age, he felt called to the ministry. After receiving a Master's degree from Southern Seminary, he pastored several churches in North and South Carolina, including First Baptist Church in Asheboro, NC.
Dr. Gibson was preceded in death by his first wife, Lita M. Gibson and two brothers, Jacob and Roddy.
He is survived by his wife Bobbie, two sons, Jim and Frank and four grandchildren, all of Randolph County. Additionally, his brother Glen and sister Dorcas and their spouses are in South Carolina.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 29, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Pugh Funeral Home 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC and 10:00 - 10:30 AM at church on Tuesday.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church 133 North Church Street, Asheboro, NC. Officiating will be Dr. Phillips McRae, Rev. Mark Hall, Dr. Scotty Carpenter along with Jim Gibson. Special music will be provided by Fred Taylor.
Interment will be at 3:00 PM at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.
