Dr. George B. Johnston, age 95, of Asheboro died Monday, December 26, 2016 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Dr. Johnston was born January 24, 1921 in Kelford, NC to Mr. A. C. and Amanda Johnston.
Dr. Johnston did his undergraduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill where he attended medical school for two years. He then attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA and served his internship at Bryn Mar Hospital. Dr. Johnston received his surgical residence at Watts Hospital in Durham. He then joined the US Army on July 5, 1946 and served until June 7, 1948. He obtained the rank of Captain while working at the V.A. Hospital in Augusta, GA. Dr. Johnston retired from the medical profession after 35 years of service with Randolph Surgical Associates where he practiced with Dr. George Joyner and Dr. Marion Griffin. Dr. Johnston was an avid tennis player, golfer and a private pilot. He was a life member of the NC Zoo Society and a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Bryant Johnston; daughters, Amy Johnston Ingram and husband Hal of High Point, Sara Neal Johnston of Gainesville, FL; son, George Johnston, Jr. and Clare Stephens of Charlotte; grandson, Hal Ingram, III of High Point; sister, Ann Johnston Isley of Raleigh
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 30, 2016 at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Rev. Lynda Ferguson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
